Chaffinches are members of the finch family and were introduced into New Zealand in the 1960's. Finches use they powerful beaks and gizzards for grinding up seeds.

Fantails are insect eaters (insectivores). Their tail helps them make quick movements in the air as they hunt flying insects. Fantails build several nests and lay more than one lot of eggs each year (from 'In the Garden', N. Barraud and G. Candler, 2013).
